In 2000, I was drugged and sexually assaulted. Since then, I’ve been on a quest to find as much information on Date Rape Drugs as I can. If you or someone you love has been effected by these drugs, please read this material carefully. I believe that it is knowlege that sets us free.
Rohypnol
Street Names: roofies, roachies, La Rocha, forget pill, pastaa, peanuts, whiteys, ropes, pappas, ro-shays, robinal
*It is illegal in North America but legal in 64 countries around the world.
*Rohypnol is used as a powerful sedative or sleeping medication.
*The tablet is white and looks slightly smaller than an aspirin. It’s often packaged in bubble wrap that gives it a false sense of safety or legality.
When ingested it enhances effects of alcohol, marijuana and other recreational drugs, and therefore called an alcohol extender.
*Rohypnol is tasteless, odorless, and colorless and therefore may be added to any beverage.
*It can be ingested orally, chewed, dissolved under the tongue, crushed, snorted, dissolved in liquid and injected, or smoked.
*It is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal or GI tract, and rapidly redistributed to the tissues.
*Rohypnol is difficult to detect in a beverage and is excreted in urine quickly after ingestion, therefore not found in blood samples. Swallowing tablets with a carbonated beverage, fruit juice or coffee, enhances drug’s effect. When mixed with alcohol, effects are even more enhanced to dangerous levels, giving it a synergistic effect.
*It enhances disinhibition. It potentiates effects of GABA, a neurotransmitter in the brain and peaks in about 2 hours. Effects may last up to 8 hrs.
Symptoms
*Effects are felt within 20-30 minutes of ingestion with the strongest effects felt within one to two hours.
*Effects are dose related.
*Judgment is impaired.
*There is a potential loss of motor control ie. staggering gait
*Amnesia, or loss of memory is often present.
*Unconsciousness can occur if a large dose has been given.
*Effects begin within 15-20 minutes with the full effects appearing within one hour.
*The inability to speak clearly, feeling of intoxication, and nausea are all common side effects.
*Victim may wake up intermittently during assault.
*Victim may be hung over or feel disoriented for several days after the assault.
*Memory loss with difficulty to recall details of assault may delay reporting.Currently, Rohypnol is very cheap and easy to purchase. The cost is only between $2-$6 a pill! A newer version of Rohypnol changes color when placed in a drink, but it is still very easy for someone to obtain the older version that leaves no physical signs.
GHB or Gammahydroxybutyrate
Street Names: known also as Easy Lay, Liquid Ecstasy, Gib, natural sleep-500, somatomax
*GHB is used in some countries as a general anesthetic, treatment for insomnia, treatment for alcoholism, an aid in childbirth by increasing the strength of contractions and decrease in pain, and assists in dilation of cervix.
*It is believed to work on neurotransmitters in the brain, which is linked to GABA-a neurotransmitter found naturally in the brain.
*This causes the Central Nervous System to have depressant effects such as sedation of the Central Nervous System by binding to neurotransmitters in the brain.
*It has been reported that the dose causing amnesia is not much lower than the dose which can cause death due to respiratory depression.
Symptoms
*Intense drowsiness, abrupt sedation and deep sleep with difficulty arousing are symptoms.
*If the metabolism is efficient, peak concentrations are reached in 20-60 minutes.
*The effects may last up to 3 hours.
*GHB readily crosses blood-brain barrier.
*It enhances the state of relaxation, desire, enjoyment, and decreases inhibitions.
*It is colourless, odorless, and slightly salty.
*This also affects victims memory.
*Within 15-30 minutes, the following effects can occur: nausea, dizziness, vomiting, drowsiness, amnesia, vertigo.
*Most of the effects disappear after several hours, but dizziness has persisted for up to 2 weeks.
*The severity of symptoms is increased with use of alcohol, benzo’s ( such as Roofies), cannabis, or amphetamines.
*Negative effects with long term use or toxic levels ingested include: liver failure, LOC or loss of consciousness, and nausea and vomiting, unresponsive sleep, potential for respiratory problems.
*GHB also has a synergistic effect when combined with alcohol and other drugs.
*It is often physically addictive.
Where did it come from?
*In the 1980’s GHB was used as an OTC (over the counter drug) found commonly in health food stores. It was used by body builders for its steroid enhancing effects and belief that it stimulated growth hormone, although this has never been substantiated.
*It was banned in the 1990’s.
*GHB is also used as a recreational drug often at Rave parties. It offers an alcohol and hangover free high.
*It is often used in liquid form, but can also be found in powder form.
*It may be smoked and snorted.
*It is manufactured in home laboratories from GHB powder or granules, therefore strength may vary and be toxic.
Ketamine
*Known as Special K, Kit Kat, vetalar, ketaset
*It is chemically related to PCP or angel dust.
*It is used as both a veterinary and human anesthetic drug used for dental surgery or sedation of children for minor procedures.
*Ketamine can be smoked, snorted, injected, or ingested orally.
*Because it is not used widely, its long term effects have not been studied. Only short term effects have been reviewed.
*Tolerance to this drug causes the user to need more and more to get same effects, which leads to habituation and physiologic addiction.
What are the effects?
*It has a dissociative action, a type of out of body experience, yet victim is conscious.
*There is a loss of grasp with primary senses, feelings of peace, detachment from body, enters a type of transitional world of darkness, leading to a near death type of experience.
*Ketamine often causes those under influence to feel connected to emotionality.
*Symptoms also include loss of memory, amnesia, and hallucinations.
*Patients often state the are awake but feel paralyzed.
*This can cause violent reactions in some people who take the drug in excessive amounts, with aggressive displays, impaired self control, hallucinations and other toxic side effects such as nausea and vomiting.
*The victim may also suffer from conductive hearing loss and not be aware of loud noises.
ECSTASY
Street Names:also called E, MDMA.
*Ex is found in pill form and liquid for about $30 a pop.
*It is a type of amphetamine that enhances energy and increases emotional bonding.
*Ecstasy was used in the 1970’s in psychiatry to help patients get in touch with their emotions, and give them a feeling of tranquillity.
*Those who use this drug state that it allows you to connect with people, to connect to a life force, to feel at one with others.
*It appears to the user to enhance their sexuality.
*It may also become psychologically addictive.
*Toxic Doses used in the Rave scene while dancing for hours and in combination, causes body heat to occur called hyperthermic reaction. This can easily lead to dehydration, insomnia, palpitations, and headaches.
*Herbal Ectasy comes in a drink form and gives a rush of energy, although it is not as strong as the pill form.
